Tones and Intonation: Some Current Challenges

چکیده

It is well established that lexical tones and intonation are not mutually exclusive. Moreover, the presence or absence of lexical tones in a language does not by itself constitute a fundamental typological divide for intonation systems. Two dimensions of typological diversity are brought out: (i) concerning lexical tone systems, it is suggested that the analysis of contour tones into sequences of levels, which has clearly demonstrated its validity for numerous languages, does not actually apply to all; (ii) concerning intonation systems, it is suggested that languages differ in whether – and to what extent – they have ‘intonational tones’, i.e. tones of intonational origin that are structurally similar to lexical tones. ‘Intonational tones’ strictly speaking appear to be relatively rare. A hypothesis is set out concerning the relationship between the nature of the lexical tone system of a language and that of its intonation system: it is suggested that the encoding of intonational phenomena in terms of tones tends to thrive in languages that have a lexical system of level tones – by a process of tonal reinterpretation of intonation – whereas languages that have non-decomposable contour tones tend not to have tonal intonation.

Effect of intonation on cantonese lexical tones.

In tonal languages, there are potential conflicts between the FO-based changes due to the coexistence of intonation and lexical tones. In the present study, the interaction of tone and intonation in Cantonese was examined using acoustic and perceptual analyses. The acoustic patterns of tones at the initial, medial, and final positions of questions and statements were measured. Results showed th...

Confusability of Chinese Intonation

Do lexical tones interfere with the realization of intonation types? Given that tone and intonation both use F0 as a primary cue, can a listener reliably identify statements and questions when some of the channel capacity is taken up by lexical tones? We study this issue through a perception test on a carefully designed and obtained intonation corpus on Mandarin Chinese. Our study shows the fol...

The effects of speaking rate and intonation on the duration of tones in Mandarin Chinese

This study investigates the effects of speaking rate and intonation on the duration of tones in Mandarin Chinese. My previous study found that the effect of intonation on the duration of tones is tone-dependent, i.e., the final falling tone is longer in question intonation than in statement intonation, whereas the final rising tone has similar duration for the two intonation types. In this stud...

Intonation in Quechua: Questions and Analysis

Research on the suprasegmental system of Quechua has largely focused on the placement of stress within a word. Previous descriptions of Quechua intonation found in the literature offer a schematic representation of the intonation contour. Perceptual assimilation and discrimination of falling, level, and rising lexical tones by native English speakers

Perceptual assimilation model posits that the perceived relation of non-native sounds to native sound categories predicts the discriminability of non-native sounds [1]. This study examines whether the degree of perceived similarity between Vietnamese tones and English intonation patterns predicts the accuracy of tone-contrast discrimination. In a categorization task, ten native English speakers...
